On February 25th, 60 participants came together to clean up a very special area within Pattaya Thailand. The area of Na Kluea is a test site for Conservation Tourism.

Conservation Tourism is a method to educate visitors on the needs of the environment. Furthermore, it encourages practices to minimize environmental waste and encourages local conservation in the area.

Starboard’s Environmental Project Co-Ordinator, Thippayasukon Mongprasert supported our Plastic Offset Program team at the event. Furthermore, Trash Hero Bangkok also joined!

The clean-up bought together many governmental and private agencies. Furthermore, whilst cleaning up these individuals were able to network to understand how to come together more. As a result, there will be a follow-up meeting in a month to understand how to action remedy methods from their clean up learnings.

In total, the clean up lead to 887.5 KG of waste being collected from the waters and the waters edge. On the other hand, only 21 KG of this total was recyclable. Moreover, this is a sad reflection of how our waste is dealt with once we have used items for such a short time. Additionally, efforts like cleanups will continue to develop Conservation Tourism.

What can we do to limit waste?

Once again, this is a reminder that we cannot rely on recycling methods. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that we must reduce all the plastic that we are using. If we are to evolve from this, we must refuse as much plastic as possible in our day to day lives. In addition, re-using the containers we have will reduce the number of materials we use over our lifespan!
