The voyage
On May 14th, five brave souls boarded the 54-foot sailboat TODAY to cross remote parts of the Pacific Ocean and gather insights on the sea’s rapidly declining health. The crew of researchers, sailors, actors, and artists will be monitoring and documenting visible and invisible plastic waste for five months on their way to New Zealand.
I guess this doesn’t surprise us anymore… As studies say that for 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean!
The mission
During the voyage the crew members are using a Mantra Trawl to collect water samples (from parts of the ocean that have never been gathered before) to detect plastic particles also known as micro plastics. This new data will be sent to researchers to analyse and quantify the impact of plastic waste is having on our ocean, marine life ecosystem and the seafood we eat.
