This February, our two POP chapters in Myanmar launched an environmental education program to teach the local communities about plastic!
Our two POP chapters in Ngapali and Rakhine State, Myanmar, launched an environmental education program, aiming to educate thousands of people about plastic.
Starboard’s POP teams in Myanmar have collected more than 20 tons of beach and ocean plastic every month since its launch in September 2022. Through our Plastic Offset Program, we want to prevent the loss of lives of marine animals due to ocean plastic pollution and reduce damage to vital ecosystems such as coral reefs. Although to create sustainable communities in polluted areas where we collect, we need to do more. Therefore, Starboard’s POP team in Myanmar created Environmental Education Programs. With these programs, we aim to educate local communities about the hazards of plastics, and how individuals can help to prevent these.
Environmental Education Programs
Alongside collection activities, we want to improve environmental awareness in the areas we collect. We are currently implementing environmental education programs alongside both of our chapters in Myanmar. The programs are discussion-based and are adapted for people of different age groups, occupations, and backgrounds. In addition, our POP chapter managers are working with the residents in the village to provide basic waste management systems.
Success!
The first environmental education program was held on the 10th of Feb in Singaung village in Rakhine State. 250 students, from the primary to secondary level of Ngat Taw Public School participated. Our POP teams had an amazing day with the students. Playing games, hosting question-and-answer sessions, and providing essential information about plastic pollution problems. All pencils and tools we provided for the event were then donated to the school to continue their learning. Similar education sessions are also held in Gyeik Taw village in Ngapali. In both locations, we are excited to find students who are interested in learning and improving their community.
