Hosted at Craigdon Mountain Sports, Scotland, this Water Safety lecture shared the fundamentals of safely enjoying water activities. At this time, the evening fundraiser event raised money for Scottish charity Groundswell and was presented by Starboard Ocean Ambassador, Stevie Boyle from Ocean Vertical.
It’s firstly important to note that Scotland is known to have the worst drowning rate in the UK, with many people enjoying the outdoors and being in the water. This event aims to give advice on how to enjoy the water to reduce the drowning rate. Firstly, welcoming the event was record-breaking adventurer Mollie Huges, who introduced the evening. Then, Mollie passed it over to Sally Harris who highlighted the great importance of the work of Groundswell Scotland. Following this, Stevie Boyle from Ocean Vertical gave a lecture on how to enjoy the water safely, aiming to reduce the drowning rate. Without a doubt, this event bought together water lovers welcoming many open water swimmers, Paddleboarders and Kayakers.

In particular, Lecture Leader and Ocean Ambassador Stevie Boyle gave insights into the importance of the team dynamics to expeditions. When teams are coming together or whether you are on your own, you must assess certain aspects:
Route chosen
- The capability of all participating members, mentally and physically
- Appropriateness of the kit used
- The danger of peer pressure from others
- Conversations among the team
- Weather forecasting
- Condition changes
- Need to adjust or change plans
- Important Support for Women Who Experience Trauma
What’s more, the money raised from this event is supporting the Non-for-profit Women’s Surf Therapy organisation Groundswell Scotland. The NGO promotes psychological, physical and psychosocial well-being through surfing as therapy. Learn more on their Instagram page!
