In the run up to Paris 2024, the excitement around the iQFOiL class continues to grow, with a record number of major events being held in 2023. And we are proud to say and each of them was 10X climate positive.
Since becoming an Official Olympic Class, Starboard and iQFOiL have committed to calculating and offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with the class events. In 2023, we measured the footprints of 10 major events, including the World Championships and iQ Games for Senior, Youth & Junior Classes. For each event we take into account the CO2 released by transport to and from the event, as well as the fuel used by safety, media and coach boats.
Based on these footprint reports and as part of the class’s commitment to the 10X climate positive movement, 49,812 mangrove trees have been planted. This means that over the next 25 years, enough carbon dioxide will be sequestered to offset the emissions resulting from these events 10 times over.
Neutrality is no longer enough and we must take action now to ensure that our sports are not only positive for people, but for the planet too.
We also recognise that the sport doesn’t just affect the environment during these events. Our impact starts the moment we begin the manufacture of our equipment. So for every iQFOiL board produced, 11.4kg of shoreline plastic is collected (that is the same weight as the board) and 22 mangrove trees are planted to offset production emissions 10X over.
