Firstly, our aim is to reduce negative impacts towards our environment in as many areas as possible. Starboard and SOMWR support various sporting events to calculate the CO2 emissions of those who travel to the event. In addition, some events will calculate extra elements such as electricity and fuel use.
Starboard and SOMWR work with our partners and event organisers to gather event data. Which in turn helps us to calculate their CO2 emissions. Once we know this, we are able to make these events carbon neutral or carbon positive through planting mangrove trees.
- Carbon neutral events plant 1 mangrove for every 1 tonne of CO2 emissions identified in calculations.
- Carbon positive events plant more than 1 mangrove planted per 1 tonne of CO2 emissions identified in calculations.
- 10 x carbon positive events will plant have 10 mangroves per 1 tonne of CO2 emissions identified in calculations.
Furthermore, the aim of supporting these events is to help individuals increase their awareness that everything they do creates a CO2 impact of some sort. Once you know your impact, you can work on ways to reduce your emissions. Following this, we can use nature to sink down the remaining equivalent.
Let’s take a look at the Outdoor By ISPO event
Europe’s largest outdoor trade fair, all of its emissions through electricity use were offset 10 times over, therefore, going past carbon neutral to being carbon positive for this element of the fair. CO2 consumption was offset by planting 320 mangrove trees.
