Today, we are releasing our 2023 carbon footprint, sharing our impact in our most comprehensive report yet…
Every year, since 2017, we publish our carbon footprint report to provide an accurate account of Starboard’s CO2 emissions and every year we strive to improve our calculations and reporting. This year we have taken our report to the next level by following the internationally recognised GHG Protocol. We have expanded our scope and fine-tuned our calculation methodologies.
Why do we calculate our carbon footprint?
The purpose of our report is to highlight and be transparent about Starboard’s CO2e emissions and our impact on the planet. We understand that measuring our environmental impact is the first step towards identifying areas for improvement and implementing positive change.
Alongside this, another crucial reason for accurately reporting our carbon footprint is to continue our commitment to being 10X climate positive. Only by working out exactly how much CO2 we release, can we work out how many mangroves to plant and sink down 10 times that amount.
What’s new this year?
This time around, we have chosen to follow the GHG protocol reporting guidelines, which means our report stands alongside the likes of AstraZeneca, IKEA and WWF. As well as extra detail, this year’s footprint includes improved calculation methods, further insights into our production calculations, and extended boundaries for where we measure our emissions from. You can also expect to find out where we’ve made some emission reductions.
Above all, we want our report to mean something to the reader. So this year, we have also included direct comparisons for the production emissions of some of your favourite products. In this way, we hope that you can get a better understanding of the impact of our boards, beyond just their fun on the water.
What is the GHG protocol?
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol was established in 1990 and it provides standards, guidance, tools and training for business and government to measure and manage climate-warming emissions. It arose from the need to standardise industrial approaches to carbon accounting and, today, it represents a ‘gold standard’ for footprint reporting.
Our goals for 2024
Looking ahead, we’re hoping to continue progressing the accuracy and usefulness of our report. Empowered with better accounting, we can further identify areas for emission reduction and decrease our footprint total as we work towards our net-zero targets.
Every year we strive to be better! If you have any feedback, recommendations or questions, please contact us at eco@star-board.com
