“With water there is life.” Let’s care for our oceans so we can learn to truly live.”
Brianna inspired by her experience at Starboard HQ and Starboard’s vision to let sport lead the way to a more sustainable future. Then the idea arose to create the ‘The Blue Carbon Project.’
2020 marked the year that Starboard welcomed junior ICF technical champion Brianna Orams to the dream team. Following this, Brianna is an environmental science student and competitive paddler. She also deferred university to become an eco intern at Starboard HQ. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 her first year of international racing and internship have been temporarily cut short.
The missions of the Blue Carbon Project is to restore blue carbon environments. Therefore providing us with more adventures on healthier oceans, and for us to all live climate positive lifestyles.
What is a blue carbon environment?
In simple terms ‘blue carbon’ refers to the carbon sequestered by the ocean’s and coastal ecosystems. These consist of three main environments:
- Mangrove forests
- Salt marshes
- Seagrass meadows
The SUP community spends countless hours on the water and in blue carbon environments.
The ocean is our backyard.
There is an opportunity to create a community of citizen scientists and ocean advocates that paddle with a purpose.
The Blue Carbon Project runs a series of events called Blue Explore involving paddle and tree planting in Brianna’s local area Auckland, New Zealand.
Coming soon there will be a system for donating to the Blue Carbon Project which involves planting tree’s in blue carbon environments.
