The Professional Windsurfers association wanted to reduce the environmental impact of their major events.
Working with Starboard Blue, they took action by collecting set amounts of shoreline plastic and planting enough mangroves to make the events 10X climate-positive.
Measurement and reporting
Through the support of Starboard Blue, the PWA published their environmental impact reports, assessing the carbon footprint of major events and also addressing the plastic usage of athletes, spectators and PWA staff members.
Action Taken
10X Climate Positive
Since the Marginane Grand Slam of 2021, the PWA have made a further 9 major events 10X climate positive. That means that, overall, the PWA have planted a total of 38,418 VCS certified mangrove trees.
Picking up plastic
In 2019, the PWA collected 1000kg of ocean plastic, representing 1kg for each of the first 1000 spectators. In 2022, they extended their action by collecting 11kg for each of the 300 athletes and 35 PWA staff members. Going even further in 2023, they increased this number to 14kg. In total, the PWA have collected 8505kg of shoreline plastic.
