Our aim is to reduce negative impacts towards our environment in as many areas as possible. Starboard support various sporting events to absorb the emissions of those who travel to the event. For some events the electricty usage has also been covered.
Depending on the event, Starboard make these events carbon neutral or carbon positive through planting mangrove trees.
Carbon neutral events have 1 mangrove planted for every 1 tonne of CO2 emissions identified in calculations.
Carbon positive events will have more than 1 mangrove planted per 1 tonne of CO2 emissions identified in calculations.
10 x carbon positive events will have 10 mangroves planted per 1 tonne of CO2 emissions identified in calculations.
The aim of supporting these events is to help individuals be aware that everything they do creates a CO2 impact of some sort. Once you know your impact, you can work on ways to reduce your emissions and use nature to sink down the remaining equivalent.
Check out the events we’ve supported below.
With the iQFoil Equipment being the selected equipment for the Windsurfing diciplin at the 2024 Olympics. Starboard felt this was the opportunity to show how we can reduce the impact of all sporting events. Each event will be mande 10 x carbon positive every year on the lead up to paris 2024.
INTERNATIONAL CANOE FEDERATION
Environmental Action Partners Starboard and the ICF came together in 2021 to make selected events carbon neutral and the SUP World Championships 10 times carbon positive.
PWA GRAND SLAM
In 2021, the PWA Grand Slam event became 10 times carbon positive thanks to the sponsorship of SOMWR. Furthermore, The Club Nautique Marignanais (CNM), SOMWR and the PWA implemented many actions to reduce the events impact.
EUROPEAN FREESTYLE PRO TOUR
Building upon the 2019 collaboration where the EFPT emissions were made carbon neutral. The 2021 events were made carbon neutral plus 10% to absorb the CO2 events from previous years over time.
DEFI WIND SUPERSTARS
For each Defi Wind rider, staff member and volunteer their estimated CO2 emissions are being planted for due to a lack of information gathered. On average 0.5 tonnes of CO2 is released during travel, per person, at similar events. Together the event went 10 x carbon positive with 5 mangrove trees were planted per person.
VOICE OF THE OCEAN EXPEDITION
Starboard are the official Environmental partners of the Schurmann Family’s Voice of the Ocean Expedition. As part of this partnership we have calculated the carbon emissions from the expedition preparation and planted almost 10,000 Mangroves to offset emissions. We will also continue to calculate and offset ANY monthly emissions for the 2 year duration.
CHESAPEAKE BAY PADDLE
Ocean Ambassador Chris Hopkinson paddled 240 KM across the Chesapeake Bay to raise money to support water filtering oysters being restored to the Bay. For every 1 million Oysters placed in the Bay, Starboard planted 1 mangrove.
STARBOARD DISTRIBUTOR MEETING 2019
Each year our company has a meeting with many of our distributors at our head quarters in Thailand. With this comes a lot of flights and CO2 emissions. We also calculated the CO2 emissions from the electricity and shipping for some of our distributors too. To reduce the impact caused we plant 10 times as many mangroves to absorb the travel emissions.
Totalling 1306 trees planted.
NAUTIC SHOW AND PARIS CROSSING
The Nautic show team approached Starboard to switch it up another notch to help the environment. In 2019, the Nautic Show’s travel and electricity emissions become climate neutral through the planting of 24,000 trees. The largest event of its kind to absorb its emissions through tree planting.
ISA SUP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
In 2016, the ISA set a new standard at the Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship by focusing on becoming carbon neutral through planting 4,000 mangrove trees.
OUTDOOR BY ISPO
Europe’s largest outdoor trade fair, all of its emissions through electricity use were offset 10 times over, therefore, going past carbon neutral to being carbon positive for this element of the fair. CO2 consumption was offset by planting 320 mangrove trees.
250 participants from the Nautic Paddle 2018 event responded to a survey sent by Starboard to calculate the carbon footprint of those travelling to the event. 87 mangrove trees were planted to absorb all travel emissions.
EUROPEAN FREESTYLE PRO TOUR
The 2019 EFPT had many tour stops in different European countries. More than 70 riders out of 19 different countries joined us this year. They traveled to events by airplane, ferry, and car or a combination of several ways of transportation in order to get to the spots. In order to absorb the emissions of the whole tour, 75 trees were planted.
SANTA CRUZ PADDLEFEST
Carbon emissions from the transportation methods taken by the participants from around the globe were made carbon neutral through the plantation of 47 mangrove trees.
BRITISH SUP CHAMPIONSHIPS
Whilst enjoying outdoor events there is a hidden negative effect on the environment that may not come to everyone’s mind straight away. Travel emissions. For the British SUP Championships, a total of 20 trees were planted.
HEAD OF THE DART
A total of 66,800 miles were traveled by the 260 event competitors. Emitting a total of 12,774 kg of CO2. 13 mangrove trees were planted to absorb emissions.
