SEA MONKEYS project
Ocean Plastic Solutions & Education
Our mission is to reduce and ban single-use everyday plastics by educating and inspiring the youth to get them passionate about the environment and reconnect with nature. At the same time we teach them about pollution and what’s harming the nature we all love so much; to get these kids to stand up for the voiceless and for their future.
About Sea Monkeys
Our project is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and build small, portable, and sustainable plastic recycling machines that we are franchising to small village community’s throughout Asia and beyond. With the machines, we shred, melt and remold plastic into an item of a higher value that raises awareness, such as necklace pendants, keychains, coasters, bowls and more. We teach the locals how to recycle and educate them about plastic pollution, the locals can also get extra income from recycling. Companies send us requests for bespoke recycled plastic products made by poorer communities. We also conduct ocean plastic education through workshops, workbooks, camps, and courses.
How it started
Mum, Dad, Indi (11) and Sydney (14) started this project in 2016. The protect came to light because they live on the ocean, on a sailboat, and have been sailing and traveling on our boat since 2011. The team is originally from Australia but in 2015 they sailed away to South East Asia. On their journey, they saw just how bad the plastic pollution problem really is and how it harms our ocean home and the saline we all love so much. They knew they had to do something about it. When they reached Malaysia the family created The Sea Monkey Project. Educating the youth and recycling plastic into new items. But the family continues to sail and travel to spread the message and show the world of the places seen by the family that is tainted by plastic.
We have a lot of exciting projects happening now and in the future! Some include me developing an educational course on pollution and nature that will hopefully be in schools by next year, a collaboration with The Body Shop, we supplied a plastic recycling machine to Starboard and are helping them develop molds. My mum – who is a cartoonist – has illustrated a huge 255-page workbook by Ambassadors For The Planet, it teaches anything from climate change and plastic pollution to sustainability and reconnecting with nature, and we are all super psyched about it!
Our main recycled plastic product that helps support our project is turtle necklaces. These turtles are made by underprivileged people from poorer communities. For every turtle sold one pound of plastic is collected. If you would like to support our project you can purchase a turtle necklace through this link: turtle-necklace-recycled-plastic.
The Sea Monkey Project has also made a Precious Plastic machine for Starboard. Where they will use the materials from their cleanups to make things such as medals for events and trash pickers.
