SUSTAINABLE SAILING EVENTS
Minimize the waste footprint to the environment and the ocean of sailing events.
Dirk is a sailing and water sports enthusiast that spends every free minute at, in or on the water. With the passion to run sailing events such as the Kieler Woche / Kiel Week, which also happens to be the worlds largest. Whilst running these huge events Dirk’s aim is to make them as sustainable as possible.
Sustainability at the Kiel Week (Kieler Woche) event has won itself six platinum clean regattas titles in 2019. The evolution of the sustainable events has grown from 2018 where Kiel Week received the Gold Level certification. This award comes from Sailors For The Sea “Clean Regattas Program”, the world’s only sustainability certification for water-based events.
Since 2018, the events Dirk has worked on have focused their sustainability and impacts of the following areas: Infrastructure and Natural Sites with Waste Management, Sourcing and Resource Management through going paperless and using reusable sailors bags, Mobility and fuel efficiency, Climate and the reduction of emissions, and increasing awareness through the workforce community.
Throughout the following years, each event will develop on each of the main focuses which align with the IOC and World Sailing.
